What is Employee Motivation and Motivation Types



Employee Motivation is a factor or factors an employee to peruse task or goals. It is the level of energy, commitment, creativity, that a company's worker bring to their job. It is always management challenge to motivate their employees what ever the market condition is.

There are two main theories that is often use by employers.

  • Extrinsic Motivation
  • Intrinsic Motivation 


Extrinsic Motivation 

Extrinsic motivation refers to behavior that is driven by external rewards. It is important to note that rewards can be either tangible or psychological. Money and trophies are two common types of tangible rewards.
psychological forms of extrinsic motivation  can include praise and public acclaim. A child might clean his/her room to receive positive praise from parents. An actor might perform on his role inoder to  obtain the attention and acclaim from his audience. In both of these examples, while the reward is not physical or tangible , it is a type of motivation reward that is external to the actual process of participating in the event.


How effective is Extrinsic Motivation ? 

This type of motivation can be highly effective.When we take our own life examples , we do thing in order to get some type of external rewards.
Even with the employees, they achieve targets, cover all key responsibilities, for their salaries, incentives, bonus or to get promoted to the next level.



Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation refers to behavior that is driven by internal rewards. In other words this motivation engage in a behavior arises from within each individual because it is naturally satisfying himself.

"Intrinsic motivation occurs when we act without any obvious external rewards. We simply enjoy an activity or see it as an opportunity to explore, learn, and actualize our potentials"



How effective is Intrinsic Motivation ?

This type of motivation is highly effective as it is arises within each individual. These type of employees are self motivated and they love their job. They do the job to satisfy them selves which automatically satisfy the customers who have begin served. These type of employees can spread the good name of the company and they are highly focused on the quality of their day today work. These employees work with positive attitude can they make their surrounding to be filled with positive employees and customers. These types of employees are asset to the organization.

  1. Well drafted article you got there Viraji, yet i have a counter point, i think these motivational techniques very much addressees in general. Assuming this in third world countries, most people expect a handful of a salary as their window to motivation.

    1. Yes I agree with you RD, easily employees can be motivated with the money or salary for a
      short period of time, yet they are is a risk that they wont be with the employer for a long period, when they found a better package they tend to move to another, where Intrinsic motivation comes from inner of each individual they do the job for their own satisfaction or doing the job make them happy, so i think this type of motivation will little last longer than the first point i mentioned.

Your article is informative,Both the two types of motivation theory is very important in one's life but the most needed one is the intrinsic motivation.this means that one must motivate him or her self first before any other external motivation in organization.If staffs are well motivated the organisation will experience serious increase in output.
